Despite our inner-city location, we have given hundreds of people their first opportunity to grow their own vegetables and enjoy a bit of garden life.  Our food growing sites at St Luke's and around the neighbourhood make permanent and temporary use of derelict land, We have won many awards and inspired similar projects across Islington.

(Update March 2012)

The food growing spaces at the St Luke's site are coming to a temporary end whilst we are about to enter our next and final stage of building development on the site. Although this residential development is subject to planning consent, as part of the landscaping works we are seeking permission to reinstate nearly all of the food growing space.  This will be better designed and more accessible for those with disabilities and mobility issues.

In the meantime we have found a suitable site for a sizeable number of food growers on a patch of land kindly being loaned to the community by Islington Council, just round the corner to us in Lever Street.

We are proud of our achievements in gardening and keen to share what we have learnt. We love telling the world about the benefits of food growing and inner-city estate-based gardening.  St Luke's gardening project staff and gardeners regularly provide hands-on educational stands at local festivals during the year, getting children and adults to decorate flower pots for their own seedlings, taking cuttings, making natural christmas garlands and much more.  If your business or organisation would like someone from our gardening team to come and show you the benefits of an activity that is natural, healthy, educational and tasty, contact Heather Stabler on 0207 549 8181 (hstabler@slpt.org.uk)

Heather Stabler, our Community Gardener, is available to support all gardening initiatives in the EC1 area - whether these are part of a ‘Friends Of’ parks group, a local Tenants and Residents Association or Tenant Management Organisation, a nursery, adventure playground or simply a group of interested gardeners.

The help offered is tailored to each group’s needs and ranges from attending meetings; running horticultural workshops, bulb planting, putting together hanging baskets, delivering food growing sessions, helping with funding applications, lending tools, sourcing supplies, organising corporate volunteer days as well as simply just disseminating information of use and interest.

In addition to our own food growing space there are already 6 other food growing spaces in the EC1 area - five on local estates and one in Fortune Street Park.

Please get in touch if you’d like some help getting a gardening project up and running, are interested in food growing or would like to volunteer.

If you are someone who takes pride in their local green spaces or wants to volunteer to help keep St Luke's gardens clean and weed free, gaining valuable skills at the same time, please contact St Luke's gardening team on 0207 549 8181 to learn about the volunteering opportunities on offer.  We also have extensive experience arranging and supporting corporate volunteering team-building days in and around local parks and green spaces in the EC1 postcode.
