1. What does St Luke's do?

St Luke's Parochial Trust (or simply St Luke's Trust) is an old independent community charity that provides services to local people from a large public community centre it owns in south Islington.

2. Can I use your Centre as an individual?

Everybody is welcome to use the Community Centre. People who live within our area of benefit can enjoy priority use of our subsidised facilities and services, often for free. People who live outside the area may be asked to pay a small supplement if they wish to use the Centre.

3. Can my organisation use your Centre?

St Luke's allows outside organisations to use the Centre as a meeting place or space to deliver a service. Depending on the nature of your organisation, and your client group, we may charge for room hire.

4. Are you a religious charity?

No. The charity values the diversity of faiths in the area but does not promote any particular religion. The name St Luke's comes from the ancient parish of St Luke, Old Street where the charity is located. The old church is still located on Old Street but is now a concert and music venue. When the church closed down after the war, the responsibility for the parish reverted to St Giles' Church, Cripplegate. The Rector is a Trustee of the Charity.

5. Where does your money come from?

St Luke's funds arose from donations of land given to the St Luke's parish charity hundreds of years ago. These donations are now invested in a portfolio that provides dividends and interest to fund the ongoing costs running the centre and trust. We are largely independent of statutory sources of funds.

6. Do you give grants to people in need?

At the moment we do not provide grants to individuals. Under a historic scheme, we still provide pensions to older people living in the area of benefit. No new pensioners are being created.

7. Do you give grants to organisations?

The Trust will occasionally provide financial support to organisations who wish to deliver services within the Community Centre to people in our neighbourhood. Most of the time this support is in-kind such as through free room hire.

8. Are you connected to Cripplegate Foundation?

St Luke's shares a long history with Cripplegate Foundation although we are two entirely separate organisations. Cripplegate are a grantmaking organisation serving a larger area of benefit than St Luke's Trust's.

9. Why are you building a new centre?

The current building is old and no longer suitable for community centre purposes. It is expensive to maintain, difficult to manage, and is inaccessible to many people in our community due to its age and design. A new centre will be more accessible and affordable and is wanted by the local community.

10. When will your new centre be built?

We hope to have moved to a new centre by 2012 despite the current condition of the property market and economy.

11. Where will your new centre be located?

We expect it to be located on our current Central Street site or within a few hundred yards.

12. Will you still be a centre for old people?

Although we have plans to make sure that the current centre and the new centre are used by a wider cross-section of the community, St Luke's is committed to providing and improving the current range of services to older people.
