EC1 New Deal Succession

EC1 New Deal for Communities (NDC) is one of thirty-nine NDC partnerships across England that has received government funding over a ten-year period to kick-start the regeneration of deprived neighbourhoods. EC1 NDC was awarded £52.9m for the period from 1 April 2001 to 31 March 2011.

The EC1 NDC area is contained almost entirely within the our area of benefit. EC1 have their own website at www.yourec1.com explaining their vision for the area and what they do.

St Luke's is one of the main successor organisations to EC1 NDC and we have already taking on elements of their work in preparation for the end of their funding in March 2011. These new activities will be additional to the services we currently provide.

In addition to revenue funding of services, EC1 has also committed at least £495,000 towards the capital costs of our new centre project.  The benefits this new centre will bring will help sustain succession activities for the future.

What are these succession activities?

The activities which we are already in the process of taking on or intend to manage oursellves include:

Public Festivals: We have taken over the organisation of the EC1 Summer Festival to complement our own expanding range of public festivals such as the Finsbury Arts Festival and Christmas Fayre

Gardening Programmes: St Luke's took over the horticultural project work in April 2009 and have used their expertise to build on the existing community allotment schemes in the area.

Neighbourhood Management Coordination: St Luke's now manages the Neighbourhodo Steering Group as part of local neighbourhood management provision.  Details of this work can be found at their website www.loveec1.com

Business Engagement and Local Volunteering: We are already performing these functions through our Business Link work and Timebank.

How will St Luke's afford this ?

During the last three years of EC1 NDC's lifetime, they have continued to support us during the transition process with their financial and staff resources. After this period, St Luke's will be left in a much stronger position to secure funds from statutory partners such as the Local Strategic Partnership to continue these activities as part of their mission to deliver and resource 'Neighbourhood Arrangements'.

EC1 have also part-funded the position of Business Development and Partnership Manager. In 2009, the creation of this allowed us to increase the number of activties and services we provide to over 65 per week, and brought in over £650,000 new income.

St Luke's should also be a much stronger financial position and potentially able to fund some of these succession activities using our own resources, having made cost savings through developing and operating a more efficient purpose-built community centre.
