Need for a new centreSt Luke's aims to open a new multi-purpose neighbourhood centre in 2011. In numerous studies, people living in our area have expressed their desire for more community facilities. Our new Centre will therefore be open to everyone. Our local area lacks a suitable community building to act as a hub for local services provided by other charities and public organisations. Our vision is to have an accessible centre that is welcoming, valued, and used by everyone living, working, learning or playing in the area. The Ward of Bunhill, where we are based, is within the bottom 10% of the most deprived wards in England and Wales, and in the bottom 13% of the most deprived within London. People who live here typically have low incomes, child poverty is high, unemployment levels are well above average, lots of housing is below standard, and many people suffer from poor health and disability. There is high population turnover and as a result, there is no longer a strong sense of community that there was once. Huge efforts have been put into regenerating the area over the years, in particular by EC1 New Deal for Communities since 2001. The Community is now starting to reap the benefits of this work but the work needs to continue beyond 2011 when the EC1 New Deal programme ends. St Luke's is transforming what it does as a charity so that we can be a major part of continuing the EC1 New Deal programme after 2011, and we believe a multi-purpose community centre will be an important asset in the area's continuing improvement. |
