The New St Luke's Centre

Building work began in February 2011 on our multi-million pound project to refurbish, remodel, refit and extend our community centre. The new centre will be modern, accessible, and a public building for young and old alike.

Our contractors are LIFE Build Solutions Ltd. They are already on site starting Phase 1 of the works and expect to be finished by December 2011.

A letter to our neighbours from LIFE can be downloaded here (pdf 377kb)

A press release for the new centre is available here

The works for Phase 1 comprise comprehensive modernisation and reconfiguration of the existing building to include improved areas for older persons' services, a cookery classroom, multi-use activity rooms, social enterprise and artists space, new lifts and toilets, and much more.

Phase 1 includes very little exterior work, and any that there is received planning approval. (Islington Planning Application P101604).

Phase 2 will hopefully start in 2012 and will include buidling a new street frontage, entrance and community cafe.

The community centre remains operational as much as normal throughout the building works; We will not be closing. This is being made possible by phasing the works on a floor-by-floor basis, and using a mobile kitchen to continue operating the cafe service.

Funding for the building work is still being put together. We are currently submitting applications to grant and loan finance institutions, and have already been successful in securing up to £640,000 from EC1 New Deal for Communities

Plans for new centre

We held a month of public consultation on our building designs and future operating plans during the month of July 2010.  The results of the consultation have been used in our design team meetings and will help direct our operational direction for years to come.

Thank you to all those hundreds of people who took part!

Background to new centre

Since 2007, St Luke's has changed expanded its focus beyond helping local residents over 55 years old, and now offers or hosts activities and services for the whole community.

It soon became apparent that despite our successes in attracting greater numbers to the centre and providing many more activities to local people, the community centre building has many issues and problems that limit our full potential.

The improved and extended centre will overcome these problems. The new centre will reflect our multi-purpose character and be truly open, welcoming and accessible to all. The current centre is also expensive to run and maintain; the new centre will be cheaper to operate, easier to maintain, and provide new means to increase and diversify our income.
