On 18th March 1982 HM the Queen officially opened the doors to St Luke’s Leisure Centre, which was to become St Luke’s Community Centre, on Central Street EC1. Although St Luke’s existed long before that date as several smaller local trusts, it marks the start of the recognisable community hub running today, providing services, events and activities for the benefit of people in the area.

Michael Ryan, CEO of St Luke’s, says: “It’s an exciting milestone for our charity, and the opening marks the start of St Luke’s evolving into the local community hub it is today. We have video footage of the opening on our YouTube channel, and viewers can see how much the area has changed in that time. We’re very much looking forward to celebrating with our members and marking this great occasion.”

The film of the day will be shown to members of the over 55s and history groups at St Luke’s on 18th March 2022 over an afternoon tea at the Centre.
