About Our Centre

At St Luke's Community Centre, our mission is to serve our vibrant and diverse community of south Islington, London.

About St Luke’s Community Centre, south Islington

Community is at the heart of everything we do, and our spacious Community Centre on Central Street in south Islington enables us and other organisations to offer services and activities for those who need them at little or no cost. Our aim is to improve the quality of lives for people living in our area of benefit (details below) and break down barriers, particularly for the most vulnerable.

We are now open longer hours during the week and at weekends: Monday to Thursday 9am-7pm, Friday 9am-5pm, Saturday and Sunday 11am-3pm (closed Bank Holiday weekends). During our opening hours we are a designated Warm Space to use in winter, or a Cool Space if the temperatures soar in summer – all locals are welcome. Read a story here about how our Warm Space benefited a local resident last winter.

Meet the staff and other members with a tour of the centre for all new members or those who are interested in becoming a member. The tours will take place every Friday, 10.30-11.30am and Sundays 11.30-12pm. Meet in reception and a member of staff will let you know about all the activities, events, services and membership benefits that are available to you. At the end you will be invited to have a cuppa and chat to members and staff.

We have a daily Lunch Club for anyone over 55 living in Islington, with a healthy, subsidised three-course lunch. We have a programme of free after school classes for children, including table tennis and dance. We also have daily activities for adults including employment support, sewing, line-dancing, art, table tennis, walking and much more. We run many one-off events and activities for locals.

We have large and small rooms for getting people together, and facilities that enable us to run varied events, an online centre with free WiFi and much more for all ages. We have a fully-equipped Cookery School, which can be hired out, with all the income going back into classes to teach the local community about healthy home cooking on a budget and avoiding food waste. We have outdoor spaces for locals to enjoy, including an Edible Yard where we grow our own food and a sunny terrace.

We often work outside in the community supporting other groups and running community events. Please call our Helpline for information.

We’re a designated Safe Haven

St Luke’s is a designated Safe Haven and part of dementia-friendly Islington, a public place to seek refuge. We have trained staff to take care of people in need and provide a safe place to any resident who is feeling vulnerable or unsafe when out and about in the community. This might be because they are being targeted or harassed, or because they are feeling unwell or confused. This is intended to reduce the fear of crime within Islington whilst also empowering and informing residents about how best to report crime or anti-social behaviour.

We are proud to be part of the Octopus Community Network – linking a group of larger community centres across Islington who work collaboratively for the good of the local community. Octopus Communities are proud holders of the Queen’s Award 2022 for Voluntary Service.

Our Green Promise

We at St Luke’s are committed to protect and enhance the environment for future generations by acting responsibly and considering environmental, social and economic factors in our decision making. For further information please on St Luke’s Community Centre & Trust’s Environmental Policy, email

St Luke’s is proud to be a Living Wage Employer.

We have achieved Level 1 Trusted Standard for charities with the NCVO.
